Droid X vs iPhone 4: A Play in Pictures

Did you guys hear? OMFG! The new Droid X has an HDMI output! H-D-M-I OUT-PUT!!!!!!! Magic cakes!!!!!!! Isn’t that a useful feature!

Oh, hey there Grandma! I know you’ve been jonesing for HDMI output on your phone because you totally know what that means and spent the $80 a normal retailer charges for an HDMI cable. And what’s that? You even bought the hard to find mini-HDMI adapter? Radical! Oh and I bet it’s easy, like falling off a log, to set up. Ohh nooeess!!! It’s notttttt?!

This is what using HDMI on an Android phone is actually like according to the tech savy, professional gadget blogging CNET:

After spending some time encoding various file formats and sizes, we found that MP4 movie files performed the most consistently. Also, files rendered closer to the Evo’s native 800×480 resolution worked best as larger videos stuttered and would not play properly on-screen.

Well, don’t worry about that Grandma! It’s a good thing we bought you all that file conversion software and that new Alienware gaming rig to convert your huge video collection to MP4 in your codec of choice. But wait! What’s that Grandma? You were actually hoping to show photos of your kids over HDMI? Well F*CK, apparently Android phones CAN’T do that. They can only use the HDMI output for the bundled video player and/or YouTube, so no luck. But don’t worry Grandma! You can still brag to all your friends that your phone rocks because it’s like totally open!!! Yay!!! And don’t be scared of that creepy robot eye either Grandma!

BUT OH WAIT. What’s this? The iPhone 4 has BABY-DMI Output! Oh SNAP! That phone just made a goddam baby! It’s miracle! Hallelujah!

And that dude is downloading the baby on his iPhone! Double snap!

No, I was wrong. That phone didn’t make that baby. That baby made that phone call. You can call MUTHAF*CK!N BABIES OVER VIDEOCHAT on the iPhone 4. And it’s so easy babies can make video calls.

Now’s that what I call a useful feature Grandma. So which would you rather have Grandma, the Droid X or the iPhone 4? Your call.

thanks man! BTW, what is Ning going to do with all that money once you beat them? I think they've raised 1000x more $$$ than you. Maybe they'll give you some of it.

…Funny about baby thing but mostly ridiculous as you don't need adapter for droid x hdmi and you can display photo gallery and even phone op display…so you don't know wtf you are talking about author. Oh wait your an Apple user, you can't use anti-virus software, save documents, and have trouble turning things on, just like their commercials say. Suddenly..it all makes sense…

Well, I am going to have to disagree with you regarding the HDMI point. Per
    http://www.droid-life.com/2010/06/23/droid-x-ac...
The Droid X doesn't use a standard sized HDMI port.
And I think you're confusing “not being able to” and “not wanting to”. You would be correct if you said that I don't WANT to run anti-virus software, save documents or turn things on. That should all be done for me.

Also, to be clear…I think Android is an absolutely AWESOME mobile OS. My main point is that it is being marketed incorrectly and the handset vendors are throwing in silly hardware features. Android is still purely marketing on features and not creating a long-term brand. I want Android to be here in the long-run and personally think they will attain #1 market share. Cool? I like Android OS software and hardware, but I think they are marketing it all wrong as demonstrated in the photos above.

Yeah I can agree with that to a point regarding marketing. The thing about Android is, you can make it whatever you want! Provided you have the right know how you can even improve multitouch, its completely customizable and versatile. My rooted, overclocked moto Droid can do anything an Iphone can and I wager better. But I know when its out droid x will not require any extra adapter it will be included in phone materials, it will just be a special chord, and it should be for fing $399.

Agreed that Droid is far, far, far more flexible than iOS. It's just that Android needs to now appeal to a wide user base. Per my blog post, grandmas can't and won't root, overclock or convert file formats and resolutions etc. Thanks for being reasonable though.

comw on people…the i phone only has 5 mega pixel……and as for the video chat….you failed to mention that only other iphone users can video chat with you…..come on the keyboard doesnt even correct you when you make a mistake…..and as for data……verizon has unlimited for a flat rate……as oppose to at&t charging you for a set amount of mb….the point is……IN A WORLD THAT DOESNT………..DROID DOES!!!!!!

    1) Going forward Verizon is putting cpas on data plans too. Unfortunately this is reality of the wireless market now.
    2) Who cares about megapixels on cameras? Megapixels != quality and the difference between 5MP, 8MP and 10MP is more about the size of the sensor than the MP.
    3) The iPhone 4's FaceTime is written in an open protocol. Give it a few weeks / months and we'll see FaceTime compliant desktop and mobile apps…even on Android!
    4) You would have listed multi-tasking but Droid doesn't have that advantage anymore
    5) The iPhone keyboard does correct as you type and even has spellcheck now
    6) I actually like Android. But I don't care about features. I care about user experience for normal users.

Actually Android can still truly multitask iphone isn't true multi tasking

  12. #12 by Thomas Loverro on July 1, 2010 - 12:08 am

Sure…you can say that, but “not full multi-tasking” is actually a feature.

This feature lengthens battery life, improves overall stability and ensures users don't have to worry about task managing apps. Believe me, it would have been much easier for Apple to allow any and all multi-tasking than do it the way they are doing it. Mobile devices are not desktops. There are good reasons for such restrictions. See: Battery life on HTC EVO vs. iPhone 4.
